Korea tax refund for tourists: instant refund vs airport
Updated October 2026
You paid 10% VAT on every K-beauty haul. Most visitors leave about 5–8% of it on the table.
Who can get it
Foreign visitors staying in Korea for less than 6 months, shopping at stores with a Tax Free sign. Most stores need a minimum spend per receipt — ask at the counter. Bring your physical passport.
Option 1 — Instant refund at the store (easiest)
- Show your passport at the register and pay the price without the tax.
- Works for purchases under ₩1,000,000 each, up to ₩5,000,000 per trip in total.
- No airport queue, but keep the receipt — customs can still ask.
Option 2 — Airport refund
- Ask for a tax refund receipt when you pay.
- At the airport, before checking your bags, scan your passport and receipts at a refund kiosk.
- If the screen asks for inspection, keep those items in your carry-on to show customs.
- Take the goods out of Korea within 3 months of purchase, unused.
